Washer Fills but Does Not Agitate
If your washer fills with water but doesn’t agitate, the problem is likely to be a faulty lid switch, a broken belt, or a problem with the motor. (Note: Direct-drive washing machines do not have belts.)
To diagnose the problem, do the following:
1Check the washing machine’s spin cycle. If this works, the motor is operating and the belt is not broken. If the spin cycle doesn’t work, the belt may be loose or broken. Tighten or replace the belt.
2Check the lid switch and the tab on the lid that strikes it. If the plastic tab is broken, the washer may halt during certain cycles. Press and release the switch. If it doesn’t click each time you do this, it’s probably broken. Remove the switch, test it, and replace it if needed.
3If these measures don’t work, there may be a problem with the controls, or the agitator solenoid may be broken. Call an appliance repair person.
Washing Machine Does Not Spin
If the washer seems to complete all of its cycles but doesn’t spin:
1 Check to see if the clothes have jammed or are unbalanced in the drum. Unbalanced clothes will also cause a washer to shudder or “walk.” Open the lid and re-position the clothes. This automatically resets an off-balance shut-off switch; just close the lid. If straightening out the load doesn’t stop the washer from shaking, look at the feet and be sure they are properly adjusted to keep the washer sitting level on the floor (you just turn a knob to move them up or down.
Microwave Oven
1. Smoke, sparks, and burning smells.
These are signs of a serious and urgent problem. Stop what you’re doing, and turn off and unplug the microwave immediately. There’s no going back if you see smoke or sparks, or smell something burning. Your microwave is failing, and it’s time for a replacement.
2. Food isn’t cooking properly.
Part of the appeal of microwaves is that they seriously speed up cook time. If your microwave is heating food much slower than normal, or not at all, something is off.
If you think your microwave’s power is starting to wane, give it a test. Cook one cup of water on high power for two minutes. If it’s not piping hot, it may be time to consider a new microwave.
Black uniformity issues like clouding or flashlighting can only be seen during dark scenes, and only when the TV is being watched in a dark room. If you watch TV in a room that gets a bit of light, this isn’t so important.
No LED TV has a perfect uniformity, but in most cases, you won’t notice it unless you really look for it. However, some TVs (like on the above, left) have exceptionally bad black uniformity. If you get something that bad, it will make a big difference in how much you enjoy what you are watching.
NATIVE BLACK UNIFORMITY PICTURE
Our picture test captures the black uniformity imperfections on a TV’s screen and is meant to show you what the quality of the blacks is in terms of what you actually see. Of our two black uniformity tests, we consider this the most useful for most people.
To evaluate the black uniformity on TVs, we take a photograph of this pattern, in a pitch dark room, with the following camera settings: F4.0, ISO-200, 2 sec shutter time. The backlight of the TV is set so that white emits 100 cd/m2 of light. In order to show the TV’s true uniformity, we don’t turn on local dimming for this test (the local dimming feature is scored separately in our reviews).
The camera settings we use were chosen so that what you see in our picture reflects what you see in a dark room.
